We updated to 8.2.5 as we had some issues due to Blizzcon today removing 8.2.0 version from their content delivery network and hence half of people getting "Streaming error". We will post new 8.2.5 Wow.exe in couple of minutes, you just need to drag it into your existing RPHTiny/_retail_ folder.

Hello everyone.

 

Around a year back I posted a thread for a combat system I designed. It was flawed however, most of the criticism given was how RNG-centric it was. The new system I designed, primarily for use in The Golden Age, has more of a focus on player decision. It's a bit like rock, paper scissor.

 

At the core of this system is something called "patterns". It can also be called a "move". It is simply something you do in your turn. The various melee combat patterns have the following base properties:

1. An attack pattern counters a respective defense pattern and vice-versa

2. An attack pattern is countered by a respective defense pattern and vice-versa

3. Is equal to a respective pattern and thus require the combatants to roll.

 

Attack patterns also require the attacker to pick a location. Even if you bypass your enemy's defenses, you might miss. Thrusting at someone's weapon arm or head isnt that easy, for example.

There are also rules for the basic firearms, rules for wounds(bleeding and shock), and rules for archetypal weapons.

The system is designed around swashbuckling sailors and Human-esque races, so it doesnt have any race statistic and doesn't include all possible weapons. It is however, very flexible, and I often modify the rules on the spot if the DM'd situation requires it.

It's really gimmicky, but the gimmick can't really be worked with as much as you think tbh. The gimmick isn't really that fun to begin with, either. It's like For Honor on paper, except you can't read your opponent. You'd notice that most fun systems do not have a very complicated combat phase, but rather what you can do with builds and your imagination, tools that this system has to provide for people to work with.

Check Dungeon World for an example of a system that's familiar to people already and also introduces a gimmick that's really nice and provokes some imagination, I suppose. Also really good for guilds.

It's hard to respond to what you've said since you make a broad generalization of a rather large document instead of pin-pointing bits of your critique. I will have to make presumptions then on what you mean.

By "gimmick", I believe you refer to the core gameplay which is really just an extension of Rock, Paper, Scissor, and all the tactical elements that includes. Yes, that in itself can't really be worked with much beyond its core tactical implementations. This is a good thing however. Players themselves don't really need to keep track of anything other than the core patterns, while it's the DM's job to handle wounds and some of the internal rules.

Deeper tactical levels than the basis of RPS is added by the various weapons. A club for example excels at overhead strikes, but the pierces are really ineffective. So, your enemy will propably expect you to do the most effective attacks. They might not expect you do do thrusts then, so you can do that to gain an advantage early on in the fight. The people in my guild have developed some unique strategies for their characters, and even strategies that are different from when they fight players and NPCs. One common tactic is starting the fight with attacks that are easy to land but do little damage, and once they've beaten their enemy enough they go for riskier strikes. This is what I would classify as "builds".

 

The bit above either isn't really complicated either. It's really based on basic knowledge of weaponry. A rapier is good at thrusting. An axe is bad at thrusting, etc. Players dont need to know every single quirk either from the start, that's something to be developed over time, like all forms of games.

 

Lastly, I think your perspective on this thread is entirely wrong. You say stuff like "good for guilds" and "that's familiar to people", and even "Complicated". If I wanted to make something that isn't new, what would be the point in making a post at all? I'm obviously trying to do something that is new.

I haven't been in any other guild for several years and I don't play any DnD-style games. My systems and DMing is entirely based from my own experiences and the critique I get from my guildmembers. And this system is built for a very niche audience(my guild) that enjoys system-heavy, autistically realistic, consequence-heavy, decision making systems like this. The old system I used was purely RNG-based and my members liked that much less than my current one, which we've been using for several months and a lot of events.

I simply posted it here because my guild members have received it very well, and no one I've played with(several of my members have been DMs btw) have played with anything like it, so i figured the rest of the community might appreciate it. If someone wants to take some inspiration from it, like the RPS element and use it for some home-brewing, thats fine. As I said, I'm not always 100% strict to all the rules myself and I often mix in a few bonuses for people with unique weapons or races.

 

If you'd really want to critique it I'm going to need better comparisons and you pointing exactly at what is unnessecary, not fun, complicated, etc, and propose an alternate solution, rather than some half-assed "google it" comment.
